In the mid-1960s, about two years after the introduction of automatic transfer molding machines and screw-preplasticizing/transfer molding machines, the concept of in-line screw injection molding of thermosets (sometimes referred to as direct screw transfer or DST) was developed. It had long been thought that this process, already highly successful with thermoplastic materials, would be impractical for thermosetting plastics because the critical time-temperature relationship would prove uncontrollable, and material would set up in the barrel.

Molding has been a part of human history since ancient times. It all started with sand casting, in which molten metal was poured into sand molds to form the desired shape. Continuous and progressive development in this discipline has evolved it into something extremely useful for manufacturing a plethora of products worldwide. One of the results of this development was "Thermoplastic Molding." Read More…
Thermoplastic molding is a manufacturing process that works to create fully functional parts by injecting plastic resin into a pre-made mold. Thermoplastic polymers are more widely used than thermosetting...
Thermoplastic is a polymer resin composition that becomes soft when heated; when cooled, it hardens into desirable products. Thermoplastics are easy to recycle because they don't undergo any chemical property changes when heated or cooled repeatedly.
We may have started small, but today, we offer our products and services to companies around the world. We are dedicated to our customers, and our goal is to offer better service and pricing to any customer no matter the size.

Thermoset in-line screw assemblies are fitted to horizontal or vertical clamp machines. Most horizontal clamp thermoplastic injection machines can be converted to injection of thermoset by changing the screw, barrel, and nozzle. Because most thermoset barrels are shorter than their thermoplastic counterpart, it may be necessary to reposition the injection assembly closer to the clamp fixed platen.
In the reversible molding process known as thermoplastic molding, plastic pellets are first melted, then pressed into a mold to take on their final shape, and finally fast-cooled to harden. With a high degree of accuracy and surface polish, thermoplastic injection molding can be utilized to make anything from cell phone cases to car door panels.
Today, thermoset injection molding machines are available in all clamp tonnages up to 1200 tons and shot sizes up to 20 lb. (see Figs. 8–2, 8–3, and 8–4).
Plastic overmolding is a manufacturing process that involves combining two or more plastic materials to create a single, unified part. The process enhances the functionality, durability, and aesthetics of plastic components by...
A plastic gear is a toothed wheel made up of engineering plastic materials that work with others to alter the relation between the speed of an engine and the speed of the driven parts. The engineering plastic materials used in manufacturing plastic gears can be...
Thermoplastics and thermosets are both polymer resins, but they differ when exposed to heat. Thermoplastics become soft under heat, while thermosets retain their shape. This causes significant differences between them, mainly in their applications and usage. Moreover, when these materials are used in molding methods, they exhibit differences as follows:
Rotational molding, commonly referred to as "rotomolding", is a plastic casting technique used to produce hollow, seamless, and double-walled parts. It uses a hollow mold tool wherein the thermoplastic powdered resin is heated while being rotated and cooled to solidify...
Development progressed not only on screw and barrel designs but also on stability of ther-moset materials at elevated temperatures, finally leading to successful processing by screw injection molding. (See Fig. 8–1.)
Polyurethane molding is the process of fabricating or manufacturing plastic parts by introducing a urethane polymer system into a tool or mold and allowing it to cure. Like any other type of plastic, the excellent processability...
As one of the Midwest’s oldest plastic molders, Koller-Craft has craftsmanship built into its name. We take pride in our quality injection molding work. Large to small parts, short to long runs. Excelling at product design, prototyping, close tolerance molding, insert molding & secondary services.
Thermoplastic molding is a faster way to make plastic than other techniques because of its extremely high production rate. This indicates that thermoplastic molding is a very economical and effective method of producing plastic, leading to it becoming the industry norm for making plastic components.

The thermoset molding materials developed specifically for injection molding have a long shelf life in the barrel at moderate temperatures (approximately 200°F), and react very rapidly when the temperature is brought up to 350 to 400°F as the material is forced through the sprue, runners, and gates, and fills the cavities. This unique development in materials helped to gain acceptance of injection molding as a reliable production process.
