In this three-part collection, veteran molder and moldmaker Jim Fattori brings to bear his 40+ years of on-the-job experience and provides molders his “from the trenches” perspective on on the why, where and how of venting injection molds. Take the trial-and-error out of the molding venting process.

When the temperature of an LLC is 100°C or lower, general-purpose engineering plastics like POM or PP can be used instead of metals or high-performance engineering plastics. In the case of PP, Polyplastics sees potential for PP-LGF (long glass fiber) instead of short glass fiber to increase strength, dimensional accuracy, and overall performance. It also offers Duracon bG-POM made with biomass as an eco-friendly option.

Multiple speakers at Molding 2023 will address the ways simulation can impact material substitution decisions, process profitability and simplification of mold design.

Japan’s Polyplastics says POM and PP can replace the likes of higher-cost PPS, which is typically used to channel coolant in internal combustion engines.

Processors with sustainability goals or mandates have a number of ways to reach their goals. Biopolymers are among them.

As the automotive industry moves from traditional ICE vehicles to BEVs, OEMs and part manufacturers are re-imagining the types of materials that can meet the new thermal management needs. Polyplastics believes that less-heat-resistant plastics like POM and PP have significant potential in the manufacture of EV cooling components.

Say “manufacturing automation” and thoughts immediately go to the shop floor and specialized production equipment, robotics and material handling systems. But there is another realm of possible automation — the front office.

Core Technology Molding turned to Mold-Masters E-Multi auxiliary injection unit to help it win a job and dramatically change its process.

BEVs do not have engines as heat sources and, therefore, require an LLC temperature of 100°C or lower to cool the battery. This allows for the use of less heat-resistant materials for BEV-specific components.

Enhancements to SACMI’s CCM cap compression molding system include a new CM-Flow extruder (available for retrofit) that’s said to save energy and reduce risk of black specks by up to 50%.

While prices moved up for three of the five commodity resins, there was potential for a flat trajectory for the rest of the third quarter.

The Polyplastics Group, a global supplier of engineering thermoplastics, has introduced an approach for using less heat-resistant plastics for battery electric vehicle (BEV) cooling components. Polyplastics sees strong potential for plastics such as polyacetal (POM) and polypropylene (PP) for the production of EV cooling components.

Internal combustion engine (ICE) automobiles use a long-life coolant (LLC) that is primarily made of ethylene glycol. The coolant in engines is typically maintained at a temperature of 70° to 100°C but can rise to 120°C or higher if the engine overheats. Therefore, metals or high-heat-resistant plastics like polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) are used in the cooling components and lines.

Introduced by Zeiger and Spark Industries at the PTXPO, the nozzle is designed for maximum heat transfer and uniformity with a continuous taper for self cleaning.

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) has released final figures for NPE2024: The Plastics Show (May 6-10; Orlando) that officially make it the largest ever NPE in several key metrics.

Also exhibiting at Drinktec, KHS is introducing its Loop Lite 0.5-liter PET bottle for highly carbonated beverages made of 100% rPET. Without providing details, KHS says it weighs up to 25% less than standard market CSD bottles and contains a thin interior coating of vapor-deposited “glass” that is said to have no effect on recyclability.

SACMI also is introducing new Industry 4.0 digitalization options for its cap and preform machinery. Smart Pack is a new digital package that integrates advanced sensor technology and onboard machine checks into SACMI compression molding lines for caps. It’s meant to ensure process stability through “real-time reaction” to process changes, as well as provide preventive maintenance through hydraulic system monitoring. Other claimed benefits are longer mold life through prevention of condensation, improved cooling maintenance, prompt recognition of incorrect resin loading, and up to 60% shorter plug-insertion times through improved digital control.

Successfully starting or restarting an injection molding machine is less about ticking boxes on a rote checklist and more about individually assessing each processing scenario and its unique variables.

Sustainability continues to dominate new additives technology, but upping performance is also evident. Most of the new additives have been targeted to commodity resins and particularly polyolefins.

Gifted with extraordinary technical know how and an authoritative yet plain English writing style, in this collection of articles Fattori offers his insights on a variety of molding-related topics that are bound to make your days on the production floor go a little bit better.

Resin drying is a crucial, but often-misunderstood area. This collection includes details on why and what you need to dry, how to specify a dryer, and best practices.

Other SACMI news at Drinktec includes enhancement of the rPET processing capabilities of the IPS preform injection system. Up to now, the IPS system could process up to 50% rPET in flake form, which has now been increased to 70-75% through optimized management of the flake and pellet mixture without the need to use two separate feed hoppers.

Despite price increase nominations going into second quarter, it appeared there was potential for generally flat pricing with the exception of a major downward correction for PP.

Across the show, sustainability ruled in new materials technology, from polyolefins and engineering resins to biobased materials.

While the major correction in PP prices was finally underway, generally stable pricing was anticipated for the other four commodity resins.

Drinktec 2022 in Munich, Germany, Sept. 12-16 will host several developments in molding PET bottles and plastic caps. Some exhibits, such as from Nissei ASB and SACMI, are emphasizing returnable/refillable PET bottles, which are not a significant factor in North America (Mexico and other parts of Latin America are a different story, however). However, SACMI’s new labeling developments for returnable bottles may be of wider interest in PET recycling. Developed by SACMI Beverage for its range of labeling machines is a system for applying glue dots only to the label and not the container. This is said to minimize glue use and facilitate separation of the label from the container during recycling. SACMI is also promoting the use of washable glues that are soluble in alkaline wash water at low temperatures. Utilization of the glue-dot solution requires adding a Speed Coat kit to the labeler. In the case of wraparound labels, this system can apply the glue only to the parts in contact between the two label edges. At the recycling stage, a cutting accessory from SACMI easily separates the label and bottle.
