Petford Tools has been provided with investment from FDC previously, as they received a £3.5m investment from the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) in 2013.

FDCs National Tooling Loan Fund is designed to support manufacturing businesses working in England, with available finance of between £50,000 and £2m, to help develop and manufacture tooling for their new and confirmed projects.

Röhm is launching two new medical products in its Cyrolite portfolio of materials at the co-located Plastec West and Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) West event in Anaheim this week.

Cyrolite G-20 CP is a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)–based copolymer for injection molding and extrusion of UV-light protective medical applications. Cyrolite G-20 CP ensures integrity of photosensitive substances such as oncology drugs, antibiotics, and antifungal agents that require UV-light protection.

Established in 1971, Petford specialises in the design and manufacture of injection mould tools for the automotive, aerospace, rail, and household sectors. They predominantly support original equipment manufacturers and tier-one automotive manufacturers across the globe, serving household names including Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley and JCB.

The compound has three times the impact resistance of other medical-grade acrylics and features high light transmission with little haze, said Röhm.

Dudley-headquartered toolmaker and plastic injection moulder, Petford Tools has secured a £1.5 million investment from Frontier Development Capital that will mean new jobs.

The company is showcasing these products in booth 1389 at MD&M West/Plastec West in Anaheim, CA, from Feb. 7 to 9, 2023.

This investment from FDC will see Petford Tools in Peartree Lane create 11 new jobs, safeguard 20 existing roles, and welcome a series of apprentices into the business.

Cyrolite MD zk6 acrylic polymer is an amorphous, impact-modified thermoplastic injection molding and extrusion compound based on PMMA for the medical device and diagnostics industry. High impact resistance and ductility/toughness make Cyrolite  MD zk6 suited for applications like dialysis cassettes, test packs, filter housings, microfluidics, luers, tube connectors, IV catheter hubs, and Y sites.

The firm has recently secured a major contract with a leading manufacturer, providing products and services to an iconic automotive manufacturer. The investment provided by FDC’s National Tooling Loan Fund will be used to help Petford Tools deliver 41 injection mould tools.

With outstanding processability and unique bonding properties, Cyrolite G-20 CP has five times the impact resistance of unmodified acrylics and high resistance to body fluids and other chemicals, according to Röhm.
